Colombia XC tour

15th to 29th February, 2012, (14 flying days!)

This will be a fabulous trip. I went there over 15 years ago on a recce for the PWC and to teach some locals and it was stunning. The countryside, the people, the wildlife and the flying sites were all fantastic. I came back and said "we should have a comp in Roldanillo" but they thought is wasn't safe enough. Hmm, but they went a few years ago and all pilots loved it too, thanks to the great flying and, in part to the great organisation of the meet director Lucho Jimenez, who is also arranging the logistics etc on this tour. He will be organising the accommodation, local transport, retrieves, and also other, non-flying tours etc. As you can see from the schedule attached and the itinerary below, he is way more organised than me, and is a perfect man on the ground, in a place like that. So this trip promises to be a trip of a life time because you visit different sites in the Valle, region of Colombia around Roldanillo, Cali, and more.

THE XC SAFARI SCHEDULE

DAY 1 (PIEDECHINCHE)

DAY 2-4 (ROLDANILLO)

DAY 5-7 (ANSERMA NUEVO)

DAY 8 (COFEE REGION)

DAY 9-10 (PINTADA)

DAY 11-14 (SANTA FE DE ANTIOQUIA)

It will be a 14 days tour of these great sites, with also visits to coffee regions and you will be staying on farms, so that you really get a feel for the country, the culture and the people as well as the flying. The tour part of the trip will cost £770, which is good value when you look at the 14 day schedule and what is included below. Because most of our normal course expenses are wrapped up in this price, we will only add £430 to cover Tim and Chris's guiding fee's and travel expenses. So the 14-day package price is £1200.

I don't imagine this will be to full but I do know it will be a great trip, so it is good to be able to organise it for pilots we know and who will really benefit from this magical opportunity. I would really like to go on this, but it looks doubtful because I will be in Australia until Feb 5th, but having Chris, Tim and Lucho there will really make sure everyone maximises the flying potential of all the great sites you fly from. You will be flying at a time when the weather in the northern hemishpere is cold and wet, and you will be returning at the beggining of the XC season, fresh and firing on all cylinders. The course includes tuition, transport, B&B accommodation, plus the intimate briefings, air-to-air training, lectures noin flying activities like horse riding and coffee farm tours etc.

The Course

On a typical day you will be driven up to the take off. There you'll be given a team brief/ de-brief, and lecture. Once everyone is ready we'll set a task to fly and then take off together, flying as far as possible, under radio tuition, as a team. One of us will be with the first group and the other instructors will be positioned throughout the pack, with the last one bringing up the rear. After a few days into the course we may change to position ourselves to look after the pilots who may need more instruction.

Our aim is to have everyone getting personal bests and making the most out of the conditions, so please feel free to ask loads of questions and make sure you sap us of all knowledge. To give you an idea last year we flew everyday and 40km was a common average. We have a great deal of information on the flight plan that we will be sending out when you book.

The launches are generally smooth but steep with a gentle up-slope breeze. You are all good enough to fly from there with no problems so there won't always be a take-off instructor there. Please remember that although you are on a course and we are giving you full instruction, where possible, you must be self-reliant and be able to make your own decisions as well. If you bomb out then you get a lift back up to take-off for another go. Ref' radios, make sure they're 2-metre band and, if possible, get a 110 volt to 220v transformer, although it is possible to get them made out there.

The course will start at 10AM on the 15th and finish at 5pm on the 29th February. After the briefing, we will go up to launch, treating it as a relaxing orientation thermalling flight getting pilots familier with the area and their kit. The big Xc's will start on the second day, were we start at day at 09:30.

We have the way-points for all the sites on Google earth and can email you the link. We will also have them on our GPS's, and can download them to yours if you want them, when we are out there.

Visa’s
Check your visa’s. The Brits do not need one providing we are staying less than 3 months and have a passport valid for at less 6 months. Our Canadian and American wing man and woman do need visas.

Vaccinations.
Make sure you have the correct vaccinations for the area. Tell the doctor you will be in an urban area as opposed to the Amazon. Give yourself plenty of time to get them as having them all at once can be a pain in the arse literally! You don’t need malaria injections/drugs as there are few mosquito’s. Obviously seek correct advice. Bring proof of your vaccinations with you as they can ask for proof at the airport.
